Australian casino operator Star Entertainment has announced that it has finalized an agreement for new duty rates on casino gaming with the New South Wales government.
The new duty rates were agreed to in principle in August of 2023 and are significantly lower than the 60% rate that was initially proposed by the previous state government.
According to the announcement, the new rates are as follows:
Rebate Play – Increases from 10.0% to 12.5% from 1st July 2023
Table Games (Non-Rebate Play) – Increases from 17.91% to 20.25% from 1st July 2023
Poker Machines (Non-Rebate Play) – Continues at current until 30th June 2030
Currently: 20.91% (excluding GST)
From 1st July 2024: 21.91% (excluding GST)
From 1st July 2027: 22.91% (excluding GST)
From 1 July 2030 all duties will be paid on a rising scale:

Commenting on the formal agreement, The Star’s Group CEO and Managing Director, Robbie Cooke, said:
“The Star appreciates the constructive engagement on this process with the current NSW Government. The formalisation of these arrangements protects our Sydney team’s jobs and enables us to continue the important ongoing work required to restore The Star Sydney to suitability, and to earn back the trust of our stakeholders.”
The company also stated that it is working with the state government towards the implementation of a carded play trial ahead of the introduction of carded play from August 2024. The carded play program is part of the government’s plan to reduce the harms of problem gambling.
